In recent years, epoxy resin flooring has been widely adopted in industrial and commercial settings worldwide due to its exceptional performance and aesthetic appeal. However, a high-performance, long-lasting epoxy floor is not achieved by chance. Its success depends on strict control over every stage, from the substrate to the topcoat. Key 1: Strict Substrate Quality Control

The substrate is the foundation of the flooring system. An inadequate substrate is a primary cause of later issues such as delamination, peeling, and blistering. An ideal concrete substrate should meet the following criteria:

  • Adequate Strength: Concrete strength should be no less than C25 to ensure it can withstand design loads.

  • Smooth and Dense Surface: A power trowel is recommended for finishing, with a flatness tolerance of no more than 2mm under a 2-meter straightedge.

  • Proper Drying: Newly poured concrete requires sufficient curing (typically recommended for 28 days or more), with a moisture content below 4%. Effective moisture barriers are essential for ground-level slabs.

  • Proper Treatment: Control joints should be pre-planned and appropriately addressed. All repairs must be made with high-strength materials (such as epoxy mortar or high-strength polymer mortar) to ensure compatibility with the original substrate.

  • Complete Cleaning: Remove all dust with industrial-grade vacuum cleaners. For oil stains, use specialized degreasers for chemical cleaning and rinsing.

  • Detail Work: Pay special attention to edges and corners using hand tools. Cracks and holes should be pre-filled with appropriate materials (such as epoxy crack filler).


Key 3: Intelligent Coating System Design

There is no one-size-fits-all solution. The coating system must be perfectly tailored to the floor's end use.

  • Assess Requirements: Clearly define the mechanical stresses (e.g., traffic type, impact), chemical exposure (e.g., oils, cleaners), cleanliness requirements, and aesthetic expectations.

  • Select the System: Choose the most suitable system—whether thin-film, mortar, or self-leveling—based on the floor's needs. For example, heavy-duty warehouse areas may require a multi-layer epoxy mortar system, while electronics cleanrooms benefit most from high-leveling self-leveling topcoats.


Key 4: Creating the Ideal Application Environment

Environmental conditions directly affect material reaction and final film formation.

  • Temperature and Humidity: Ambient and substrate temperatures are generally recommended to be above 10°C, with relative humidity below 85%. Ensure the substrate temperature is at least 3°C above the dew point to prevent condensation.

  • Airflow and Cleanliness: Maintain good ventilation in the work area but avoid strong drafts that could cause surface defects. The application environment should be as dust-free as possible to prevent contamination of uncured coatings.


Key 5: Professional Material Mixing and Application

Even with high-quality materials, improper handling can lead to failure.

  • Precise Proportioning: Strictly follow the mix ratio specified in the product technical data sheet, using a scale to accurately measure Part A (resin) and Part B (hardener).

  • Thorough Mixing: Use a mechanical mixer to blend the two components completely and uniformly, adhering to the specified pot life.

  • Proper Application: Use appropriate trowels or squeegees to ensure uniform film thickness. Complete application within the material's pot life to avoid lap marks.


Key 6: Using High-Quality Hardeners

As the "heart" of the epoxy system, the selection of hardener is critical—it directly determines the floor's final performance.

  • Performance Matching: Choose a hardener fully compatible with the resin, application environment, and performance requirements (e.g., hardness, flexibility, chemical resistance).

  • Addressing Challenges: In harsh conditions such as low temperatures or high humidity, specially formulated hardeners (e.g., low-temperature cure, moisture-tolerant) must be used to ensure proper reaction and curing.

  • Aesthetic Considerations: For topcoats requiring high decorative appeal and UV resistance, select high-quality modified amine or cycloaliphatic amine hardeners.


Key 7: Proper Curing and Protection

Post-application curing is crucial for the development of the coating's properties.

  • Adequate Curing Time: Do not allow traffic or exposure to chemicals until the specified cure time has been reached .

  • Controlled Environment: Maintain stable temperature and humidity during curing. Use barriers and warning signs as necessary.
